The 49ers late aggressiveness sealed the deal, making seven key free throws in the final four minutes of play to secure the win 65-58. Charlotte started the fourth quickly by tying the game at 45 off a 5-0 run with a jumper from Lawrence and a three from Smith. The Bulls answered with a 4-0 run of their own to regain a four-point lead, 49-45, off a layup from senior forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt. On the following possession, USF redshirt junior forward Romi Levy nailed a three to give the Bulls a lead with 46 seconds remaining. The 49ers could not answer back, and the Bulls held a one-point lead going into the halftime break.

Rebounding helped Charlotte come back in the contest, and the team will need to keep this trend going into the rest of AAC play. Three straight free throws from Levy cut the lead to four with 21 seconds to go, but two free throws from Lawrence at the other end sealed the victory. Following the shot, the 49ers got back on track, as they would go on a 5-0 run to reclaim a lead. The first three minutes of the contest were highly contested, with both teams swapping baskets. “Virginia Tech and Iowa checked every box in terms attendance, brand, passionate fanbase, and also playing style,” Yoho said. Head Coach Cara Consuegra spoke after the team's season ended in Frisco, Texas, against Middle Tennessee.
Tomekia Reed on why she left Jackson State women's basketball to become coach at Charlotte
Reed spent six seasons at Jackson State going , winning five regular-season SWA championships, making three NCAA Tournament appearances and coaching two players (Angel Jackson and Ameshya Williams-Holliday), who were drafted by WNBA teams. Reed was a four-time SWAC coach of the year and three-time HBCU national coach of the year. It’s been 17 years since players for the Sting — a now-defunct WNBA franchise — bounced balls in Charlotte. And it’s been 27 years since the city hosted a women’s college basketball Final Four, when a Tennessee team coached by the legendary Pat Summitt beat UConn in the semifinals and Georgia for the championship.

There, she added a master’s degree in arts and liberal studies with a focus on coaching, leadership and sports in 2021. Lawrence also played for the USA Women’s Basketball team that participated at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup in Lublin, Poland. "We will forever be indebted to the university and community for the opportunity to represent this first-class program." "She has a versatile game that fans will enjoy watching, and she's only touched the surface of the player she can be," said Consuegra. Charlotte won the rebounding battle in the contest, leading to the 49ers having 11 second chance points.
Though much of Diakite's game remains a mystery, she exhibited a smooth jump shot from beyond the arc and impressive finishing skills around the rim during her time at Niagara Prep. These skills hold significant potential for Charlotte as she continues to develop as a player throughout the season. The Bears flipped the script to open the third quarter, doubling the 49ers points in the paint, 16-8. Mercer was able to slow the pace of the game down, forcing four Charlotte fouls in the first four minutes, allowing the Bears to cut the lead to within seven.

Boykin played her first two years at Duke before transferring to Charlotte for her final two years. Charlotte's field goal percentage on the season was .410, and they shot .299 from beyond the arc. Senior Tamia Davis led the 49ers in three-point shots, averaging 1.3 per game, followed by junior Jacee Busick, averaging one per game.

JSU’s mark of 26 wins set a school record, including a historic 18-0 record in SWAC play. JSU won 21 consecutive games in calendar year 2022, the longest streak in the nation entering the NCAA Tournament. "Cara Consuegra's impact on this program is remarkable," said Charlotte Athletic Director Mike Hill. "Not only is she the winningest coach in Charlotte 49ers history, but she is a leader of the highest character and a treasured member of our University family." McMillian's biggest performance scoring-wise was against The University of Alabama at Birmingham on Dec. 19, where she scored 25 points in 34 minutes.
Before joining the 49ers, Consuegra was an assistant at Marquette for seven seasons, where she guided the Golden Eagles to 145 wins, two NCAA tournament appearances and a WNIT Championship in 2008. Consuegra was named Marquette's seventh women's basketball head coach after former Head Coach Megan Duffy left to take the same position with Virginia Tech on April 3. The Charlotte women's basketball team is now in its off-season and will return in the fall to the American Athletic Conference. With plenty of talent being brought in, these new players will be integral parts of carving out a successful 2023 season for Charlotte women's basketball. Charlotte’s bench scoring proved to be valuable, with 11 different players seeing the floor. The 49ers bench outscored Mercer’s 16-5, with 14 bench points coming in the first half for Charlotte.
Senior forward Tracey Hueston continued her streak of double-digit scoring performances, scoring 10 points along with five rebounds. Hueston is only 17 points shy of her total number of points from last season, with only eight games played so far. After back-and-forth scoring by both teams to start the game, Charlotte came out of the gates strong with a late 8-0 run to lead the opening quarter 19-10. Dubar averaged 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 39.9% on 3-pointers as a senior at Hofstra last season. The 6-foot-10 Milicic averaged 12.8 points and 8.5 rebounds in his junior season at Charlotte. He shot 37.6% on 3-pointers and made 56, which would have ranked third on Tennessee's team last season.
Another new guard, Olivia Porter, was originally at Michigan State University during her freshman year but chose to transfer to Charlotte, closer to where she attended high school at Northwood High School in Chapel Hill. At Northwood, Porter scored 2,000 total points and led Northwood High School to the NCHSAA 3A state championship in 2022, earning the 2022 NCHSAA 3A Kay Yow State Championship Most Valuable Player award along the way. A dynamic, three-level scorer, Porter averaged 18 points per game and shot 44% from the arc in her senior season. Along with her offensive skillset, Porter was a ballhawk in her senior season, averaging a staggering 4.3 steals per game.
Tomekia Reed has been named the ninth women’s basketball head coach for the Charlotte 49ers. Reed, a three-time HBCU National Coach of the Year, comes to Charlotte following a highly successful six-year stint as head coach of the Jackson State Tigers. Okpara averaged 5.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 70 games in two seasons at Ohio State. One of the most prolific players in 49ers history, Gregory concluded her time wearing green and white as the school’s all-time leader in three categories.

Not only will it increase the likelihood of structural damage to the home, but it can also allow a hurricane’s wrath to inflict severe damage to the home’s contents. It also increases the chance of flooding inside the home, which can lead to costly and extensive repairs. Although many of today’s brand-new homes are safer than older homes, it’s not a rule that you must start from scratch. By performing a few must-have modifications it’s possible to increase your home’s protection from high-speed winds and flooding. How can you build a home that’s strong enough to withstand the wind, rain, and other hurricane elements? The good news is that building a hurricane-resistant home may not be as complicated as you think.
Hurricane Proof House Design
Many coastal cities have building codes that require new homes to be built with high-impact windows, which are sometimes called hurricane-impact windows. Hurricane-proof houses need to be constructed from solid materials that can withstand high winds. That means opting for concrete, masonry, or steel in many cases.
Doors designed to withstand hurricanes often have thick aluminum frames with heavy-duty weatherstripping to keep out wind and rain. With hurricane doors and windows, there is less chance that wind can build up pressure to rip off your roof. Codes will be modified and there will likely be a much higher consciousness now for building flood-resistant structures. — Ed Hudson, director of Marketing Research at the Home Innovation Research Labs Eventually, he says, it should also impact building codes.
Resilient Construction Materials
Most prefab homes cost up to 25% less than a stick-built home, so it’s a great option if you’re on a budget. A Canadian company took plastic bottles that had been rejected for recycling, melted them down, and built a three-bedroom home. Then, using plastic waste, it created a composite material that could withstand whatever Mother Nature dishes out—including Category 5 hurricanes. However, the window sills are more set back because the concrete walls are thicker. You can apply most finishes to the home's exterior, with many homeowners electing to choose stucco for these homes.

Hurricane-proof your NC home: Essential steps to weather the storm
Before attempting to hurricane-proof an existing home, you need to attend to any prior damage before implementing modifications. Windows can be constructed with plastic panes, shatterproof glass, or glass with protective membranes. The panes are often more firmly attached than normal window panes, including using screws or bolts through the edges of larger panes. Concrete anchor screws are used to secure windows to the concrete structure surrounding them. Wind on the roof surfaces can cause negative pressures that create a lifting force sufficient to lift the roof off the building.

It’s important to remember that things will fly with the high winds. And even small toys can become dangerous when thrown in the wind. Hurricanes bring rain, and your gutters are essential to keeping this water intake away from your home. However, your channels can’t function properly if they’re clogged with leaves and other debris. At the very least, put some duct tape in an X-shape over the windows. This will prevent the glass from getting everywhere if it shatters.
Invest in Superior Construction
He is also breaking up much of the concrete on the ground, because the tidal surge caused it to push up against the pillars, cracking them during the storm. He said he will likely add stone pavers, which have spaces in between, and will therefore not push up against the columns. The cost in Florida however would only increase by about $1,000, since codes there already cover most of the upgrades. While there is no such thing as a hurricane-proof home, there are varying levels of resistance and investment. Deltec connects with homeowners on a regular basis—specifically before and after any major hurricane.
The company only designs high-end homes costing upwards of $3 million. Prefab homes from Green Dwellings are made with concrete and steel and can withstand the strongest hurricanes, even category 5 hurricanes with wind speeds of up to 200mph. EcoSteel, with the help of Woollen Studios, has created an all-steel prefabricated home that is hurricane-proof. EcoSteel uses non-traditional building materials to make hurricane-proof homes.
Ask your homeowners insurance company if you’ll qualify for any discounts. Storm experiences have also shown that a one-story home with a moderately sloped hip roof featuring baffled and soffit ridge vents will fare best against high winds and wind-driven rain. This post was written by Jorge Fontan AIA a Registered Architect and owner of New York City architecture firm Fontan Architecture.
They are also raised and designed to be both watertight and airtight so that no water will get inside during a storm surge. The exterior high-performance structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a standard part of residential and commercial buildings for extreme weather locations. While constructing your home to withstand hurricanes, shear walls can be helpful. These types of specially-framed walls are designed to hold up to lateral forces and keep the structure itself from moving laterally.
Still, if hurricanes are a concern in your zip code, you should consider ordering one of the hurricane-proof prefab homes that are specifically rated. Prefabricated homes usually have a myriad of advantages over site-built homes. They are cheaper to construct, and the construction time is significantly less than site-built homes.
Be sure to check the manufacturer’s specifications for wind resistance and make sure they meet any code requirements in your area. If you’re looking to build a custom home in a hurricane-prone region, get hurricane-resistant garage doors like the Clopays’ Windcode Series. These doors have steel reinforcements, extra hardware, and spring components that have the strength and durability to bear the wind pressure. Make sure to check specifications for wind resistance and code requirements for the material. Homes made with solid materials can withstand these fierce storms. Think about heavy materials for the structure, such as Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) blocks.
You can even take things a step further and build a home that includes movable panels that you can close over top of large windows in the event if strong winds. As an extra benefit, they can increase your privacy when desired. Shear walls may be constructed from a variety of materials, including concrete, masonry, steel or wood. Designed as an actual home, the living area -- kitchen, den, bedrooms, bathrooms -- takes up about 3,000 square feet. In each room, cut-outs in the walls and other displays show various building techniques, materials and energy-efficiency improvements.

Water will rush towards the house on a low point causing floods. You can make swales around your house to help divert the water. Hurricane risk is one of the costs of enjoying life on the coast. In the event that your property is in the path of one of these damaging storms, a little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your home and the people who live in it. Ron Wysocarski, a top real estate agent in Daytona Beach, Florida, is no stranger to the ravages of hurricanes.
Tips for Hurricane-Proof Home Design
The type of roof and sealants used can also play a big part in defending your home against water damage. Features such as a sloped hip roof and ridge vents are helpful in directing high winds away from your home. Homeowners can take measures to direct a heavy wind load away from the roof and walls and towards the home’s foundation.
Hurricane and Storm Resistant Homes Built to Last Since 1968
These homes are built to be hurricane-resistant, using modern construction techniques that far exceed the industry requirements for safety and energy efficiency. While a traditional stick-built home does not usually fare well in strong hurricane winds and heavy rainfall, keep reading to see how these hurricane-proof home designs will weather the storm. If you want an energy-efficient option, consider an ICF home. These building materials will give you an extremely airtight home. Along with that, the ICF foam exterior and concrete interiors will provide consistent insulation for your home. You don't have to worry about energy loss through wall joints.
There are plenty of options available to choose from when selecting your custom home storm shutters. Your best bet are storm shutters with high strength and durability. A Category 5 hurricane-proof log house is resistant to winds up to 245 miles per hour (394 km/h). Wall logs in such construction must be made of glued laminated timber and all other components of the house, including hurricane straps, must be hurricane-resistant. The combination results in a fire, earthquake, and hurricane-proof structure. These homes are elevated, have strong metal roofing, come with strong walls, a waterproof membrane, and high-impact glass.
What Are Hurricane-Resistant Houses Made Of?
Make sure there is nothing that could blow around during the storm that could damage your home. Windows are among the most vulnerable parts of a home when it comes to storm damage. That way, water will drain down away from your home, not down to your home. LaHouse is open to the public each week, Monday through Friday, but it's only open on Saturdays once a season. Once that happens, the house is now susceptible to rain and water damage. Hurricanes don't have only high winds but also bring heavy rain downpours. Unfortunately, when water gets into the structure, it can damage all of the components of the home, including the electricity. The program was created in 2006, following the hurricane-heavy storm seasons in 2004 and 2005 that saw 2.8 million Florida homeowners suffer more than $33 billion in insured property damage.
What Is the Fortified Home Program?
There are multiple options when you want a coastal hurricane-proof home that will withstand Category 5 hurricane weather. The most critical factor in hurricane-proofing your site-built home comes during construction. It needs to utilize quality material and be done in a way that’s structurally sound if you want any chance of it surviving. In North Carolina, separate policies are needed for protection against wind and flood damage. Solar panels certainly can be helpful if the grid goes down, but remember that they might sometimes be damaged in high enough winds.
These homes are designed to withstand the harshest winds, even those category five wind forces. ICF wall systems are made to protect your structure from hurricanes. Let's look at why ICF homes are an excellent investment, especially in those hurricane-prone areas. This combination creates houses that are structural battleships, resistant to tropical storms, hurricane force winds and storm surge.
It’s also important to keep gutters and drains clear so they can handle large amounts of rain runoff. ICF, like Fox Blocks, starts with lightweight polystyrene and then gains strength from placed concrete. It is the building material that architects and engineers increasingly turn to for homes meant to withstand extreme weather and hurricanes.
If your lawn area has chairs, tables, or other furniture items, it’s important to secure them too. Not only will your property be safe from the element, it will also be protected from heavy outdoor furnishings that can potentially hit and damage your house. Russell King and his nephew has it built primarily as a retirement home for King, an attorney in Tennessee. Even before the concrete pillars were poured, they had hurricane wind-resistance not just in mind, but in every aspect of the design. The home sits 12 feet above the ground and is anchored 28 feet into the ground.
Hurricane rated windows are expensive but it is worth the money. You can always consider new materials and alternative materials for building a new hurricane resistant house. Alternative or new materials will always be more expensive then traditional materials.

There are three packages to choose from, including a small-scale ceremony option, though prices for the larger packages are on par with Disney Cruise Line. Also like Disney, a reception is not included in Royal Caribbean's wedding package prices. Add-ons cover additional decorations, a mimosa breakfast, silk flowers for the couple, massages, sparkling wine upgrades, larger cakes, and cake toppers. All Carnival wedding packages can be arranged to take place on embarkation day, onboard the ship in a port of call, off the ship in a port of call and onboard while at sea (symbolic only).
The 1-item upgrade you need for a better cruise ship cabin experience (it’s already in your house)
Only couples with a relatively small guest list are able to conduct their wedding onboard a cruise ship. Most lines restrict onboard wedding parties to 50 non-sailing guests maximum. It’s important to decide if most of the wedding guests will only be along for the vows, or if friends and family are also cruising with you.

Cruises
Princess Cruises is one of the best-known lines for weddings (it is the line featured on Love Boat). Its at-sea ceremony is performed by the captain in the wedding chapel or library and includes a candlelit ceremony, recorded music, two floral arrangements, a rose bouquet and boutonniere, a professional photographer, and a small cake. Also included are keepsake champagne flutes, a bottle of wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, a deluxe breakfast for two, dinner for two at a shipboard specialty restaurant, and rose petals on the bed with turndown service. The line's at-sea wedding package is one of the pricier base rates on this list, starting at $3,300. Carnival cruise weddings appeal to younger couples thanks to the line's famous amenities and spirited, party-friendly atmosphere.
Packages include extra amenities when a minimum number of staterooms are booked for guests and you'll find cool in-port wedding offerings, including glacier ceremonies in Juneau. The line caters to a mature clientele, making it attractive to older couples looking to wed. Watch out for a la carte charges that can add up on Royal Caribbean. For instance, couples who want to plan a wedding less than 90 days from sailing pay a fee that varies based on the package chosen.
Princess' Tie the Knot packages are available on all ships, and most ships have dedicated wedding chapels. Weddings in port are available on Carnival cruise ships only in select ports (including embarkation ports), and there's a limit to how many weddings can take place on the same day. A maximum of 50 non-sailing guests may attend a wedding on the ship. Surcharges (ranging from $100 to $200) may apply for ceremonies during popular seasons, including Thanksgiving, winter holidays, Valentine's week and all of May and June.
